The design of Nansha Kingboard Plaza is a unique blend of form and function. Its architecture, grand and imposing, serves as an entrance gate at Jiaomen riverside, symbolising Nansha Free Trade Zone's position as a maritime gateway open to future opportunities and challenges. The building's form harmonises with its morphology, presenting diverse silhouettes from different perspectives with logically weaved geometric blocks.
The inspiration for this design comes from the forceful character of the mountains in South Guangdong. The volumes are stacked and rotated in sections, creating an image reminiscent of a classic ink painting scroll. This innovative approach to design sets the Nansha Kingboard Plaza apart from traditional office spaces, offering a unique aesthetic experience.
The realization of this design was made possible through the use of simple horizontal sunshade shutters and a double-layer glass curtain wall system. The horizontal lines merge with the twisted volume, resulting in elegant arcs that create a layered visual experience. The surrounding landscape, designed in a coherent linear architectural language, incorporates green terraces, decks and water features, celebrating Nansha’s waterfront culture and providing ample public green space.
The design also takes into account practical considerations. The zigzag layout of the building prevents blocking between the towers, maximising view and natural light intake. It also creates a buffer zone between the architecture and the light rail track that runs along its west boundary, minimising noise impact. The base of the building houses retail and office spaces, while the upper floors accommodate residential units of different sizes. The multiple roofs are transformed into sky gardens, and an infinity swimming pool provides a panoramic view of the city.
The Nansha Kingboard Plaza, located in the Nansha Free Trade Zone in Guangzhou, is a project that started in June 2017 and was completed in January 2021. It stands as a symbol of the 'Gate of Maritime Silk Road', reflecting the area's rich history and vibrant future. This design was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022, a prestigious accolade granted to outstanding creations that advance art, science, design, and technology.
